What are the main reasons condoms fail

Male latex condoms reduce the risk of HIV and many other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) by reducing the chance of direct contact with another person’s semen, blood or vaginal fluids. But condoms do not provide 100% protection against HIV infection.

Condoms can fail for several common reasons.

1 Using expired condoms (usually after 5 years) weakens the latex, making it easier to break.

2 Not squeezing the air from the tip before use can cause pressure buildup and rupture.

3 Lack of lubrication or using oil-based lubricants with latex can cause tearing.

4 Improper storage—such as in wallets or hot places—also weakens material. Wrong size (too tight or too loose) can lead to breakage or slippage.

5 Reusing condoms, opening them with sharp objects, or putting them on incorrectly are other causes. Proper use and storage greatly reduce condom failure risk.

6 Other main reasons that condom fail are inconsistent or incorrect use:

Consistent use condoms means using a new condom every time you have sex. Never reuse a condom.
Correct use includes putting the condom on and taking it off correctly and using a water-based lubricant with the condom to prevent breakage. Oil-based lubricants such as petroleum jelly, cold cream, hand lotion or baby oil can weaken the condom, causing it to breakage.
